May Declared as Problem-Solving Court Month in Nebraska
Nebraska is home to some of the most innovative and effective problem-solving courts in the country, and on May 3, 2023, the state's Judicial Branch officially declared May as Nebraska Problem-Solving Court Month. This celebration of the state's diverse programming was marked by a proclamation signing ceremony hosted by Nebraska Chief Justice Michael G. Heavican and Justice Jeffrey Funke, streamed live from the Nebraska Supreme Court Courtroom.
The highlight of the ceremony were guest speakers, Janetta and Thomas Albers, who shared their inspiring success stories as graduates of Nebraska's problem-solving courts. Introduced by Judge Christina Marroquin, the Albers' stories are a testament to the power of these innovative court programs which address the underlying circumstances that led to criminal behavior and the intensive community-based supervision, judicial accountability, and behavioral health treatment that provide court participants with a new pathway to become healthy.
The ceremony recognized the collaborative efforts of judges, defense attorneys, prosecutors, supervision personnel, law enforcement, treatment providers, researchers, educators, and others dedicated to problem-solving courts. Their teamwork has not only improved the lives of participants but has also strengthened communities across the state. Chief Justice Heavican's proclamation called on everyone, especially those within the legal community, to take note of the occasion and recognize the outstanding work of Nebraska's problem-solving courts.
